Coaching vs. Knowledge

The acquisition of knowledge, in other words a real understanding of the physiology and biomechanics of movement is key if you want to develop to an elite level within the health and fitness industry but don’t mistake this theoretical knowledge for the ability to coach. I’m not suggesting that my coaching doesn’t need any work, far from it…..my biggest fauxpas…..i talk way too much.

Now, if you read just a little bit about what makes a good coach you will quickly find yourself in the realm of the sports psychologist talking about skill acquisition, modes of motor learning and information processing theory etc etc…….All interesting stuff for sure but we’ll talk more about that another time.

Let’s just talk about some real basics; knowledge doesn’t equate to coaching skill. Yes you need knowledge to understand processes but a good verbal cue to get the correct outcome is worth its weight in gold. Developing an eye to recognise why things are going wrong, understanding when to push and when to pull back are all skills learnt form time served on the shop floor. Building rapport, empathy, patience and knowing your athlete/client are skills that are not dependent on being able to explain the detailed physiology behind the Krebs cycle!!!! So what am I saying? Firstly I’m not suggesting stop reading, but what I am saying, is watch other coaches, listen to how they get the best outcomes, work on your interpersonal and communication skills.

Lean different approaches to the same problem, everyone is different and will respond to differing ways of teaching.

Let me leave you with this thought. How many of you have studied under the most amazingly knowledgeable lecturer? Someone who understands every minuscule detail about every function in the human body? Someone who knows all there is to know about periodisation and designing a world class programme but has absolutely zero charisma, a monotone voice, appears as enthusiastic as a corpse and is quite frankly the last person in the world you would want to coach you.
