Getting leaner is a hot topic the world over but in that world ruled by myth and fashion, how do you achieve that holy grail of a lean yet muscular physique? The world of athletes gives us an insight into why some people are able to stay healthy, fit and lean their entire lives, and why so many others go through years of fluctuation and jumping from fad to fad. Even elite athletes fall into the trap of drastic lifestyle changes when an event calls for rapid weight loss (or gain). There are numerous examples of boxers only living a truly healthy lifestyle in preparation for a fight only to gain pounds of fat immediately after through binge eating, drinking and changing their training. This isn’t to say you can stay at peak physical fitness on a permanent basis, however with consistency and preparation, a lean and strong body is durable and very achievable. For anyone. So how can you be certain you are doing the right things when all signs point in different directions? The key, in my opinion, is knowing that it will be hard work and it will require change. If anything suggests otherwise it’s a fad and is lying to you. The fitness industry is overloaded with gimmicks and ‘new’ equipment that promise more results with less work. Research gets twisted and used for financial agendas and to push sales. At the core, the reason people are so susceptible to this marketing, is that people want things now and via the easiest route possible. That’s human nature, it’s not something that will change. So instead, I try to teach that the easiest most efficient way to a long term result is through putting the work in first time around. Two years of consistent and dedicated training and healthy eating can save you years in wasted time, wasted money and worst of all damaged metabolism from yo-yo dieting. Understand that everything is just a tool. Free-weights, kettle-bells, resistance bands, Swiss balls and cable machines to name just a few, are only tools, each with their own purpose and downfalls. Nothing is perfect for all situations the same way that a screwdriver is not ideal for hitting a nail into a wall to hang a picture. Use a drill and a screw, the same useless tool is now essential while the outcome may be exactly the same (the picture is on the wall). The method only worked because the appropriate tool was used. Your body is the picture, in order to get it where you want it you need to intelligently select the right tools. Don’t get caught up thinking that there is an easier way, if there is, it isn’t long term. Work hard in the gym and the kitchen, seek advice from someone who has done it (not for a day, week or month but long term) and never believe the hype, then you’re just a tool. Article by Alex Adams
